Editorial: What is Rockin' Docs Musicfest All About?

Rockin’ Docs Musicfest --- “Music that makes a difference”

1. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2009, 1,479,350 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States; …31,320 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed in Indiana alone.

According to The American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2009, cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in the United States, (562,340 Americans or 1,500 per day). It is projected that 1 out of 4 US deaths is from cancer. The “Rockin’ Docs Musicfest” Committee, as with many of you, has experienced the fear of cancer first hand or watched as loved ones battled this horrible disease.

2. It is estimated that if The American Cancer Society Guidelines for early detection and annual screenings were followed, the five-year survival rates would be over 95% for all cancers. Currently, the five-year relative survival rate is 66%.

Understanding the importance of increased awareness, education, early detection, and treatment options, dedicated musicians and professionals from the medical and business community volunteer annually for “Rockin’ Docs Musicfest”.

3. According to the National Institute of Health, overall costs for cancer in 2002 were $171.6 billion: $60.9 billion for direct medical costs, $15.5 billion for indirect morbidity costs and $95.2 billion for indirect mortality costs. Additionally, up to 68% of Americans have no health insurance, Medicare only, or no regular source of health care.

Over the 8 years, Rockin’ Docs Musicfest has raised and donated over $285,000, assisting in the Parkview’s Cancer Center Resource Library, Parkview Cancer Programs, Francine’s Friends Mobile Mammography, Fort Wayne Sexual Assualt Treatment Center, Riley Hospital for Children, Super Shots and Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinic. Through the broad range of services and cancer programs at Matthew 25 and our other organizations, continued funding for these not-for-profit healthcare organizations truly benefit our community.

The “Rockin’ Docs Musicfest” Committee, Band Members and Volunteers sincerely thank you for your continued support! Through music, we really can make a difference!
